~~~ it's been a while since my last journal entry, and much has happened. But I am going to skip most of the depressing stuff about the lives and health of many people I know, and most of the ongoing long-term projects that I've already mentioned in previous journals.
~~~ My booth partner Teri had to miss Convolution, but Housemate Christine volunteered to help with transportation and booth watching, and that worked out OK. I didn't get a table at Further Confusion, despite getting my application in as early as was allowed, so I am using the time I normally would be spending on making art for FurCon to start the long-delayed computer project. More about that later.
~~~ I went to the Gem and Jewelry Show with housemate Rowan and her friend. Sadly, most of my favorite dealers were not there, and there were more jewelry dealers and fewer gem and mineral dealers. I still found some useful items. I hope to get to the next Crystal Faire, and the Bead Extravaganza. And I went to the Good Sam Showcase of Miniatures, where I saw a great many examples of amazing artistry and craftsmanship.
~~~ Hiking has been good. For my birthday I was given (besides a birthday pizza) a hike in a new area, and found yet another unculverted creek of the Baxter Creek Watershed. A trail with a stone spiral is a bit to the south of that one. There are many small walkable labyrinths and spirals in my part of the world, most marked out with the local stone, some installed as part of buildings.
~~~ Morpho, one of my favorite artists, who I mentioned previously, has some new stuff which he credits me with inspiring:
~~~ My "Shapes Necklace" was inspired by Morpho, though not up to his level of craftsmanship:

~~~ There was a very nice online review of my skull carvings in the May 6, 2013 entry at the Skulls Project:
~~~ Some of the Napa quake damage I mentioned last journal, as seen by using a camera drone:
~~~ And that's some of the happenings. More on some of this later....
Total Eclipse of the Art
~~~ Since it looks like people I send to DeviantArt wind up in the new “eclipse” version of the interface, I have been trying to make it work as well as the old “Classic Green” version, but it looks like that is not possible. The new version has smaller text, useless huge blocks of empty space, less accessible subgallery folders with their labels moved from the top to the bottom, no way to edit the biographical information, other information sections disappeared, a tedious and inefficient new system for arranging gallery items..... the damage goes on and on. It's sickening, but still better than coding it all myself, and I imagine that they will fix some of the bugs eventually. ~~~ The recent change of the DeviantArt logo from “da” to “Z” was bewildering, but didn't actually break things.
There's No Vember Like....
November has been a busy month; I have got a lot of studio organizing done, but there is much more to do. I have a lot of pictures of new and old art to upload when times are more calm. Meanwhile, I wish you joy before, during, and after such of the many holidays of the next several weeks as you celebrate. :)
A Night in the Lonesome October
~~~ The other night, as I was out walking, I got a phone call from a friend, letting me know that one of my songs, Ship of Stone*, had won this year's Pegasus Award for Best Classic Filk** Song.
~~~ Hard, dry winds had been shaking the trees so strongly that many had lost branches, and drifts of fallen autumn leaves were scuttling about; the hills were dark due to an emergency power shutdown, and the air was faintly smokey from wildfires near and far. It was very late; only occasional cars passed, and a few cyclists and skateboarders. In the darkness of one front yard, a deer that had snuck down from the hills was grazing, watching me waril
Watch This Space
It's July already, life has been distracting, but good. :)
UPDATE: It's now August; good distraction continues. :)
FURTHER UPDATE: September. Mixed good and bad distraction.
(with occasional dentistry and computer work)
ADDITIONAL FURTHER UPDATE: October begins. My birthday happens (with occurrence of cake, shared with friends, yay!). Autumn weather slithers in. The traditional start of the rainy season here, but who knows; years of drought, last winter's sudden, heavy, but late arriving rains...
MORE ADDITIONAL FURTHER UPDATE: Plus, I got my flu shot.
