Made from a Bone Clone (tm) cast resin wolf skull replica. I textured, carved, and stained it, added bone disks strung on rough hemp twine, and inset an oval of dark mother of pearl.
This is part of a set of "ancient werewolf tribal ceremonial items" I was commissioned to make for a live action roleplaying game group.
I use a mix of power and hand tools. For this skull I roughed out the design with some Dremel high speed steel bits in a Foredom flex-shaft machine. Adjustments were done with an engravers burin and assorted little knife, rasp, and file tools, sandpaper, and burnishers.
Resin carves entirely differently from real bone. This particular resin is neither so hard and brittle that it chips a lot (like some casting resins I've worked with), nor so soft that it gums up drills and bits (like styrene does if carved too fast or with dull tools).
The Bone Clone [link] replicas are very well done, and I enjoyed doing this series of commissioned skull carvings (and stainings, etc.). Glad you like it. For real skulls, you might check with ~Zhon

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
