This is a carved pomander/rattle pendant in the shape of half an egg, made of teak wood with a walnut wood back. About two inches high.
There are two chambers and a cord tunnel carved into the back of the pendant and sealed with the thin walnut wood back that acts as a sounding board when the pendant is shaken. The upper chamber is filled with brown silk cord to act as a scent holder (for essential oil or perfume); it has 16 holes to the upper front in a pattern of 1-3-5-7 with stepped sizes. The lower chamber has 13 loose glass balls that sound when the pendant is shaken; it has a pattern of 9 holes to the lower front. There is also a hole at the top front, in which a tiny glass ball is mounted, and one at the lower front, holding a black onyx bead. The teak wood is stained with india ink, and the pendant has a hand-rubbed beeswax finish.
This is an entry for the proposed deviantARTist's Marketplace (which there is a poll about at [link] ) This piece would sell for $75.
And well worth the price, Don This is amazing! It looks so warm and tactile to hold. I'm all about touch where things like this are concerned. It has to feel good and I think this would feel great.
I really like the finish too. India ink? I wouldn't have thought of that for a finish color, but it works very well with this
Nice work!

That is pretty cool. I was wondering how you got the black in the grooves. Was that the India ink, or is that just the finish colour? It is quite a piece. The price seems right.

Yes, the black is the india ink. I paint the whole piece with the ink, then I immediately wipe it off and rub it with a flexible abrasive pad (like Scotchbrite) to take the ink off all but the grooved areas, and to polish the wood. Then I rub in the was, burnish the surface, rub in more wax, and go on to the next stage.

The india ink is just left in the low areas and the pores of the wood.
