Brass assemblage (with some copper, bronze and steel bits, some gold plating, and a powerful magnet), about 2-1/2 inches across. Top view on the left, bottom view on the right.
This is my first try at a mechanical insect, and it ended up looking not very insect-like. It does look better in real life, as the wings curve upward smoothly, and the small details have depth. I need to get some proper angle shots. [link]
Wearable as jewelry by using the magnet to attach it to a hairpin or a steel bit that is under clothing or part of anything. Also usable as a refrigerator magnet.
I think the reason it might not have turned out as insect-like as you wanted is the smoothness of the wings - it's pretty rare that you come across an insect without some sort of texture on such a major part of it's body. Even butterflies have the shimmer of thousands of tiny scales.
If you were to try this again, I'd suggest implementing your skills at latticework and putting in some sort of vein or spot patterns
my first thought was metal apple when I saw these in thumb nail. but still very fascinating non the less. I think if you added or subtracted from the wings it would add to the insectness of this.
Magnificent!
I miss your art.

Still, very lovely.
all and all now that I know that is supposed to look like an insect I see more elements of the insect in it.
