Intention Tool 12 by DonSimpson Intention Tool 12 by DonSimpson
Intention tool made from a springbok antelope horn and a natural smoky quartz crystal. About twelve inches long.

It took me about a year and a half to find a crystal that I thought was a proper match for the horn. The planes of the crystal faces step back evenly in a way that looks curved, though it is an unaltered natural crystal. The crystal is held in the horn with a slurry of glass microbeads and glue.

I always appreciate art and craftsmanship that is put to work for more than only esthetic purposes.

What a perfect match! This gives me so much more hope for the spare bits and pieces that I refuse to throw out! Thank you for that.

One of my problems is my ability to think of a possible use for almost anything; resulting in my having way too much stuff. :)

I have no storage, and college sort of forces me to move in and out of places often, so I need every reason I can get to justify keeping so many of my finds. :D

I really like this, it has a lovely form and I can't help imagining the feel of holding it... the weight, the direction... very nice.

Thank you. :) Yes, it's meant to be held, and the kinesthetic as well as the tactile and visual are important.

I'm pretty sure I got it from the Bone Room. [link] They get various horns in from time to time, and I go through the box of whatever and see if anything meets my standards.

"Intention...." "Tool...."

It's like Olsen's "Cow tools."

WTF???

Olsen's concept gets its unsettling humorous effect from the unlikelyhood of such a word combination in reality, as we don't think of cows as tool users. I don't, anyway.

I used "intention tool" as a substitute for "this could be thought of as either a wand with a crystal on the end or a crystal with a handle, but since the two components are about equal, I don't know which description to use, and what they have in common is that both are devices intended to help accomplish something by indicating/directing the focus of the users intent to reach that result". Of course, _all_ tools are for helping accomplish some intended purpose, so as a general description "intention tool" is... not very descriptive. But I intended it as a "term of art", a phrase that has a specific meaning in a certain context. ("term of art" is itself a term of art, which I find amusing; but I am easily amused.)

See? You had to explain it from your viewpoint.

"Intention" can have so many scary connotations..... Good intentions, bad intentions. It's a loaded word, at least these days.

"Focus tool" makes sense to me, but I like "Intention tool" better because it makes my eye twitch.

Especially English, which began as just a junkbox trade jargon, and really, in so many ways, remains so.

Indeed. I admire people who have learned to use it well as a second language. Actually, I admire anyone who has learned to use it well.

Just looking at this piece gives me delight. Can't imagine what it'd be like to pick it up and hold in my hand. Something about the curve and the ribbed horn in contrast with the facets of the quartz.

Most of my work has a tactile component (and some, the rattle pendants for instance, have an audio component). I'm glad that some of that is apparent in this visual presentation.

Thank you, :)

Whether it is a magical instrument depends on the definition of magic. I just call them implements for focusing intention.

You have a creative mind; I expect you will find uses for things.
